MY EXPERIENCE TO OLD CALABAR



My experience at old Calabar was great and interesting. My great thanks goes to Mr Charles my course lecturer and Mr Martin the tour guide who try their best to make us understand the major role of being a tourist and a tour guide.
Old Calabar is located at the Calabar south area of Cross-River state.
My visit to old Calabar make me understand so many things I have been hearing to be real.
There I saw the first post office in Nigeria which was established in the year 1901 and DE Africa club known as the discriminating club also saw the largest market in Calabar which is watt Market established in 1903.
Bassey Duke effigy is located on the roundabout at watt Market. He was the last obong of Calabar before colonialism and he's also known as a lion or ekpe man





The first photo studio in the deform eastern region is called Sixtus Ferdanance pool photo studio located at ergeton street and was establish in the year 1924

Below is the effigy of late Doctor Lawrence Micheal Richard Ekeng Henshaw, located at ergeton street ,who was the first medical doctor. He died in the year 1955 in a plane crash






In old Calabar they are known based on their lineage and there are 3 which are
Henshaw house
Duke house
Cobham house.
The first inspector general of police Late sir Louis orok Edet comes from Calabar.
The first academic professor of Nigeria comes from Calabar which is Late professor Eyo Ita . He also established the first pipe borne water in Calabar in the year 1938 and be was the founder of West Africa People Institute ( WAPI). Prof Eyo Ita died in the year 1972 and he was from the Henshaw family.

The first secondary school in the deform area is Hope Waddle and was established in the year 1895. And that was where the first football competition match was played.
The first cinema in west Africa is in Calabar which is called the Patson cinema established in the year 1979 .



The first church in Nigeria is in Calabar and it is the prsbetarian church of Nigeria established in 1850 located in creek town.

The first printing outfit in Calabar Ekika printing press (cart) where strong costly wine for holy communion and Hearst service is produce. It was located at number 10 Egerton street before moved to number 1 Anderson street






The European cemetery is located along Anderson street where the tomb of Mary slessor is found


Mary slessor was a missionary under the Scottish mission church later named prsbetarian church of Nigeria. She was born in the year 2nd Dec 1848 and died in the year 13th Jan 1915. She also stop the killing of twins in calabar


The Ekpo bassey house is known as the national museum because the first mass was observed there by father Lena



The ekpe shrine is located at Anderson off boco street



I was able to know these few things listed above during my visit to old Calabar, and it was fun experiencing all these things I have been hearing by seeing it to be real...
